Wales Virtual Institute of Sport Health & Exercise Sciences

University of Wales Aberystwyth (UWA):

UWA was founded in 1872 as the first University institution in Wales. It currently has over 7000 students and approximately 1800 staff. Most of the University is now located on the Penglais campus on a hill overlooking the town.

The Department of Sport and Exercise Science which was established in 2001 and now occupies a new, purpose-built building (the Carwyn James building) on the Penglais campus. The building is equipped with biomechanics, physiology and anthropometry laboratories. Members of 'The Virtual Institute' at UWA are active in research in physiology and psychology. Specific areas of research interest and expertise in psychology include reversal theory, psyching-up, and choking under pressure. In physiology, research interests include oxygen uptake kinetics, endurance performance physiology, exercise in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and immunology. The department currently has 6 full-time PhD students also investigating these and related issues.
